SYNTAX Critical Concepts in Linguistics

چکیده
This paper argues that "covert" operations like Quantifier Raising (QR) can precede "overt" operations. Specifically we argue that there are overt operations that must take the output of QR as their input. If this argument is successful there are two interesting consequences for the theory of grammar. First, there cannot be a "covert" (i.e. post-spellout) component of the grammar. That is, what distinguishes operations that affect phonology from those that do not cannot be an arbitrary point in the derivation ("spellout") before which the former apply and after which the latter do; all syntactic operations apply in the same component (henceforth 'single component grammar'). Second, there must be some alternative means for distinguishing "overt" from "covert" operations. One such alternative, which we can call the 'phonological theory of QR', was suggested by Bobaljik (1995), Pesetsky (1998), Groat and O'Neil (1994). These authors proposed that the distinguishing property has to do with principles of the syntaxphonology interface. Assume that movement is a copying operation with phonology targeting one copy in a chain for pronunciation. The distinction between "overt" and "covert" movement, these authors suggest, is this: "overt" movements are the result of phonology targeting the head of a chain for pronunciation, while "covert" movements result from phonology targeting the tail of a chain. We will tentatively adopt this phonological theory of QR (but see footnote 4). The argument that covert operations sometimes precede overt operations is based on extraposition from NP. Specifically, we argue that certain instances of extraposition result not from movement of the extraposed material but rather from QR of an NP and subsequent merger of an

متن کاملRepresentation of Medical Knowledge by Arden Syntax with Fuzzy Extensions
The representation of knowledge is one of the fundamental research areas in the realm of artificial intelligence. One approach to this subject has been provided by the Arden Syntax for Medical Logic Systems. At present, this syntax includes typical procedural programming language elements used to define crisp decision logic. However, medical knowledge usually contains linguistic uncertainty tha...
متن کاملFrom Structural Syntax to Constructive Adpositional Grammars
The importance of the research made by Tesnière (1959) for the concepts of dependency and valency cannot be underestimated. However, his Structural Syntax remains still uninvestigated in most part. In this paper, a formal grammar model that follows Tesnière’s intuitions and concepts as much as possible is proposed. This model is called constructive adpositional grammar. This paper explains the ...
متن کاملSocial Logic of Cities and Urban Tourism Accessibility; Space Syntax Analysis of Kuala Lumpur City Centre
Tourism is a progressively major part of economies of urban areas. Urban regeneration as a subcategory of urban tourism has been the center of many urban projects. This study addresses the role of space syntax theory as an analytical tool and design aided tool in urban regeneration. For this purpose, we examined the development of a square in the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) using space synt...
متن کاملExtracting Syntax Statistics from Large Corpora of Written English
The field of linguistics has seen a growing interest in the statistics of everyday language. In studying how we acquire language and why some of its aspects are more difficult for us than others, it is critical to understand the linguistic environment to which we are exposed. However, gathering statistics over syntactic structures, even with a syntactically tagged corpus, can be difficult and t...
متن کاملJae Jung Song, Linguistic typology: morphology and syntax (Longman
The back cover of this book characterizes it as ‘an up-to-date critical introduction to linguistic typology’. The title might suggest that it gives equal coverage to morphology and syntax, but it is mainly about syntax. Chapter 1, ‘Introducing linguistic typology’, is a useful introduction to typology. For someone new to the area, it lays out the object of linguistic typology and discusses some...
